Village Volunteers

“It takes a village to raise a child… and a village to grow a school.”

At Our Village Forest & Farm School, volunteers are the heartbeat of our community. Whether tending the land, caring for animals, or helping families feel at home, your hands and heart make a difference.

Why

Volunteer?

Becoming a Village Volunteer means more than lending a hand
it means joining a community. You’ll:

Build meaningful connections with like-minded families.

Learn new skills in farming, gardening, and nature-based education.

Contribute to a school that nurtures children, the earth, and community well-being.

Share in the joy of events, seasonal celebrations, and the growth of our village.

3 Paths

Mentors

Mentors support children during programs, helping them feel safe, seen, and inspired as they explore the farm and forest. Ideal for parents, grandparents, educators, or community members who love working with kids.

Monday to Thursday, 9 AM – 1 PM
Tuesday & Thursday, 2:30 PM – 6 PM

Farm Hands

Feed animals, tend the garden, care for the land, and help with special projects. Perfect for those who love being outdoors, hands-on work, and shaping our space.

Flexible opportunities — there’s always work to be done on the farm.

Pollinators

Spread the word, support events, and help families feel welcome. If you love community, connection, and bringing people together — this role is for you.

Flexible time — usually Friday or weekend events.

All volunteers serving in direct contact roles with children are required to complete a background check prior to participation.

Schedule and

Commitment

Village Volunteers can choose the path (or paths!) that best fit their schedule and interests. Opportunities include:

Join us in tending the garden, feeding animals, and caring for the land, a hands-on way to connect with nature each week.

Come together with other families and volunteers to complete bigger projects that keep our school thriving.

Help us celebrate the seasons with joyful gatherings that bring learning, nature, and community to life.

Lend your skills in organization, outreach, or creative projects to keep our programs running smoothly.

Locations

Dream Haven Farm

Nestled in the foothills of Columbus, NC

Home base for our youth programs and 10 acres of pure childhood magic. Think goats with personalities bigger than their horns, horses who double as four-legged therapists, gardens that grow faster than kids’ snack appetites, forest trails for epic adventures, and wide-open fields perfect for running wild (and maybe pretending you’re in a movie montage). Warning: Frequent laughter, random goat photobombs, and spontaneous mud pies are known side effects.

Baer Family Farm

Under the trees in Forest City, NC

Our cozy 2-acre food forest and garden is getting a fresh breath of life. Once lovingly tended, it’s now ready for a new chapter after the passing of its previous caretaker. We’re rolling up our sleeves (and probably getting dirt under our nails) with community work parties to clear, prune, and plant. Soon, this space will hum with life again—hosting classes, workshops, and hands-on experiences where everyone can learn, grow, and taste the harvest together.
